REALLY AWFUL

LCD barely readable, very dark, back light is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY if you want to be able to read it (when compared to my Bayer Contour). As others have stated no control solution supplied. I got this as a free meter when my health insurance company said they were no longer going to pay for the Bayer Contour test strips (only a few dollars difference). Now I know why it was free. I did a side by side test of both my meters at the same time, the OneTouch Ultra2 was 30 points higher. How is that possible, 150 vs 180? Cant make a controlled test, because there is no test solution, oh I said that already. The amount of blood the test strip needs is ridiculous.
I had two choices of Free meters and chose this one because the "Free Meter company" which I guess is not OneTouch said the computer cable would come with it. Now when I called the rep said "no that was not correct." My other choice was the Accu-Check Aviva. So I will now try that one. I loved my contour, always reliable and VERY easy to read.

If the Accu-Check does not work out, I am going to give my health insurance a piece of my mind. The difference in price for the test strips is negligible. Especially considering what I am paying for a premium.

A Simple to use Monitor

This is the second monitor I have purchased. The primary purpose was for my wife who had bad helath for many years and this was used to monitor her blood sugar. This was exactly what we wanted.

Blood Glucose Monitor

The Ultra2 is a relatively simple model among the range of blood glucose meters available today. It does its job adequately, storing up to 500 readings and allowing downloads to review them using software that can be obtained from the manufacturer OneTouch. I've used it for years in preference to some higher priced models simply because of its relative simplicity. It's as good as there is out there.

The only problem I have is that the Ultra2, like other blood glucose meters, uses a technology that should have been replaced already. Using sticks that absorb blood at the end of the stick is difficult, particularly for those whose eyesight is worse than it was a few years ago. Many sticks per month may be wasted by not applying the right blood droplet size, or by not lining the stick up correctly, or by a finger tremble. Or, as I've found, the blood may not adhere so easily to the end of the stick when the blood glucose is low - the very time you need a good measurement. In short, a better means of measurement is needed, particularly for a monitor type that is used by millions of people 2 to ten times a day.

Still, among all those existing meters with their aging but technology and highly profitable cost basis, the ultra2 measures up very well. I still use it, seven times daily, and will continue to do so until a newer technology appears on the market.

Features

Compared to the Accu-Chek Aviva, it requires a bit more blood and the lance that comes with it isn't very sophisticated, but those aren't deal-breakers.
The backlight feature is very handy and the ability to tag readings with before/after meal, too much/too little food, exercise, etc. is very handy.
Something very useful is the USB cable and software that Lifescan offers for free via their website. It's very helpful when tracking results.

I'm very pleased with the meter. I would recommend it primarily because it is so simple to use.
